When I was finally allowed to date, I knew I was only allowed to date white boys.
The one black male friend that stopped by our home to say hello to me started the biggest fight I’d ever had with my mother. If my parents exploded because my platonic friendship with a black guy, I was scared to imagine their reaction if I actually dated one.
My dad is tremendously funny and a phenomenal story teller. I wore the same pair of vans tennis shoes to school for 5 years straight, had long un-brushed hair, and wore oversized sweatshirts and jean shorts to school. Because I wasn’t popular and because I was picky, I didn’t go on a single date until I was almost 20 years old. I thought it best to not deal with this all in real time in hopes that my Dad would come to his senses.'We love her and we just love 'em through all the tough times they go through.I grew up in a wonderful and loving home in Southern California. When my husband first wooed me my freshman year in college, I threw away his phone number. The family of the black university student whose girlfriend was 'cut her off' by her parents because of their relationship has spoken out in support of her decision to launch a Go Fund Me page titled 'Say No to Racism.'The campaign brands her father a racist and asks for help with the college tuition fees she claims he will no longer pay.To define our relationship like that would misconstrue it; we were simpatico. I’d say it was bad experiences throughout school which probably made me much more accepting.
